How To Create a Format For Your YouTube Channel Videos

Creating a format for your YouTube channel videos can make it easy for viewers to remember you and grow attached to your content.  When viewers know what to expect from your videos, it’s more likely that they will be enticed to click on your videos.  They are also more likely to binge watch your videos.  This may sound boring, but the fun is in the way your tailor your format.

The truth about getting people to watch videos without turning away is trust.  Most people will tell you that they like to be surprised, but human psychology favors things that are repetitive, ritualistic, and the same as the one before.  This is something they can rely on and trust.

Once people know what they are getting, you can surprise them with something new every once in awhile.  But on the most part you want your format to be exactly the same as the last time you made a video.

Your Background
Your background should be the same, whether it is a plain color, a green screen picture, or an actual location that you feel suits your style of videos, go for it.  Just try to plan to make this background your background for at least the first 100 videos on YouTube.  This is not set in stone, but this technique is the reason why Jimmy Kimmel and Ellen DeGeneres film their shows on the same set for every show.  The public loves consistency.

Lighting and Cinematic Attributes
Try to start out with good lights and good video quality.  If you can’t it’s OK, as long as it improves over time, people will not mind that kind of change.  But once you find the right groove for your aesthetic look of the video quality, stick with it.  This will also include any color grading, music, sound effects or cinematic features you decide to include.  Use them and use them in every video. This will help to build the psychological bond between you and your audience. For instance, every time you say a certain word, your audience knows that you will show a clip or a sound cue.

Your Sequences
It’s really important to create sequences that your audience can expect in your videos.  Say the same thing in every opening sequence, such as, “Hi, it’s Patty and in this video (insert video title here),..”  Say the same thing in every closing video, “If you liked this video, please hit the thumbs up icon and if you are not subscribed, please do so you can see my next video.”

The Content
The content is where you can go wild with creativity.  Your audience will appreciate that, because they will know that they will always get something interesting and new, but they are getting it from a familiar friend.

Good luck with your videos!
